Aurora's Tales: The Ancient Pandarans of the Barrier Peaks

       The Pandarans are an old race that has been extinct for thousands of years. They lived in the Barrier Peaks long before my people took up residence in our valley. The Pandarans were tall, muscular, and covered in black and white fur; their faces had muzzles as if they were animals. While they were a generally peaceful race, having a live and let live kind of atmosphere, they were also fearsome warriors. Every member of their race, except for the very young and very old, trained and practiced their form of martial arts daily. These people were willing to defend what was theirs if they had to, though they always tried a non-violent, diplomatic solution first. When my people came to our Vale, the Pandarans welcomed us with open arms and were the first friends and allies we made. For centuries, the Pandarans lived in peace in their mountain towns, unmolested by all- except for the occasional wild beast that would happen to wander in.

       One day a party of orc adventurers happened upon one of the towns and decided it was ripe for raiding. While the Pandarans did have some treasures, most of them were of a more sentimental value than monetary. They had few enchanted items, since they were peaceful and did not go adventuring themselves; they saw little need to do so, the Pandarans were happy with what they had and did not see a need to seek out excess. My people adopted their philosophy, which made our official exile to the Vale much easier. These orc raiders saw the glints of weapons, some magical, and thought they had stumbled upon great treasures. They couldn't resist raiding this little mountain town. The rest of their day was spent watching the town, learning their patrols, and attempting to distinguish which buildings had the most treasure in them.

       Unaware of the dangers brewing just outside of their little town, the Pandarans went about their daily routines- training, teaching, tending to crops and livestock, and patrolling their borders- dangerous beasts have always been drawn to the Peaks and the Vale, making it both well protects from outsiders, and dangerous for those who dwell within. Somehow the orcs managed to evade the Pandaran's patrols all day, which was quite the achievement for a race as unintelligent as orcs.

       The villainous orcs slipped into the quiet little town under the cover of night, and caught the guard patrolling unaware. Without the element of surprise, the orcs would not have been able to bring the guard down so stealthily, and taking him down so quickly fed their egos and let them think this would be an easy raid. It was around midnight when the orcs made their strike, and most of the Pandarans had retired for the night, giving the villains an opportunity to actually succeed. The large temple where the Pandarans trained to fight was the orc's mark; it had the most foot traffic, but appeared to have the least amount of actual inhabitants, and those who came and went all had shiny looking weapons and items.

       While the Pandarans slumbered, the orcs slipped into their temple and found it to be deserted. No one was to dwell in the temple, they believed that it was too sacred to be lived in; allowing someone to actually live there would be an insult to their Gods, and it would elevate someone to a much higher status in their society, something they had seen bring other races to their doom. The foolish orcs began to ransack this most sacred place, searching for the treasure they believed was inside. All the imbeciles found were religious texts and items, and some mundane weapons and armor. The treasure they were seeking was not there.

       Thinking is not an orc's strong suit, so when the scouts discovered that there was no money to be found in the temple, they decided to attack. While the Pandarans are fierce warriors, it is difficult to put up much resistance when you're sleeping. Gruumsh was with the orcs this night, and they managed to slaughter almost all of the Pandarans while they slumbered soundly. Once they were certain they had squashed the life out of the village they began to ransack each building, slowly and methodically; they saw no need to rush since they believed everyone to be dead.

       The sun rose a bloody red that day, as if the sun itself was in mourning over their deaths. Orcs were scattered throughout the town square, drinking and arguing over who should have what. Some of them were dragging bodies out of the houses and throwing them into a large pile right in the center of the square, preparing to burn the remains of these poor victims; the bloody sunrise outlined the pile, its color matching the blood running down the bodies, staining the once white fur. A lone warrior, who had been trading in the Vale, arrived home to this scene.

       First he wept, overwhelmed with sorrow over the loss of his entire clan. Then he began planning revenge. The warrior knew of some caves not far from the village where he could hide out and prepare his mind, body, soul, and weapons for the challenge to come. He sent two birds with messages requesting help out- one to the nearest Pandaran village, and one to the Vale. His people were our dearest friends and closest allies, he knew we would help if we could reach him in time. He spent the day planning his strike against the orcs, and knew the best time to attack would be that night, when the fools were drunk. At sunset the warrior made his way back to his desecrated home, with his plans swirling through his head; the scene he had come home to played over and over in his mind.

       Twilight was approaching when the warrior reached his home again, and was greeted to the sounds of a rowdy celebration. As he had suspected, most of the orcs were drunk and were carousing around the bonfire they had made of the bodies of their victims. Throwing caution into the wind, the fighter took a deep breath and charged into his town; the rage of this scene burned so hotly within him that all reason and logic abandoned him. His hours of careful planning were for naught.

       Even though the warrior was charging in without thinking, he still had the element of surprise, since the orcs thought they had eliminated all threats the Pandarans may have. Their senses dulled by the copious amounts of alcohol they had ingested during the day made them slow to recognize that they were under attack. The fighter plowed through the first few orcs to stand in his way, since they thought he would be easy to handle since everyone else was; the fools did not stop to think that he was actually consious and armed, making him a real threat.

       In a few moments the warrior had taken down most of the orcs with quick movements of his sword. After watching their comrades fall so quickly, some of the orcs decided to attempt to combat him. While the band of orcs was relatively small, it was still large enough to make this a trying fight for the lone Pandaran. His battle with the orcs raged on for hours, until finally there were only two left to stand against him: the leader, and his second.

       The warrior was tired by this point, he hadn't slept and had been fighting for hours. Several wounds on his arms and torso bled freely, while others caked his fur and clung to his clothing. The pair he was left to face had had an opportunity to observe his combat tactics while he slain their group, and unlike him, they had not been fighting all night; they had a small advantage over him.

       It was nearly dawn when the warrior threw the Second over the cliffside on the south of the village; he died from the impact. His backup arrived in the moments before the sun rose, seeing him silouhetted against the pre-dawn silver sky, locked in combat with the leader. As the other Pandarans whispered a plan to flank the leader and take him down, the warrior drove his sword deep into the orc's belly. The battle was won.

       The village was too badly desecrated for the Pandarans to desire to continue dwelling there. They tended to the fighter's many wounds, put what was left of their dead inside their temple, and dumped the orcs down the mountainside to the treacherous rocks below. The rocks had been modified by druids to create a trap, so the rocks were as spiked and deadly as the metal ones found in pit traps today. After performing a modified version of their death rites, they decided that that village needed to be gone forever. The warrior collected the belongings that hadn't been destroyed, as well as some mementos of loved ones, and by his command the entire village went up in flames. The orcs had already burned most of their crops and slaughtered the livestock, so there were only buildings remaining.

       The warrior entered his new village, the one where his backup came from, a hero. He never considered himself to be a hero though, and despised the attention. As far as the warrior was concerned he had answered slaughter with slaughter, even though it was in the sake of vengance. He had flung his sword down the cliffside before saying his final goodbye to his clan, and vowed never to weild one again- he had taken more than his share of blood. None understood why he refused glory and a position of honor, nor did they understand why he locked himself up in his hut and rarely saw anyone. They had never taken so much life from other beings, and without partaking in a brutal slaughter such as that, it was simply beyond their comphehention.

       It is said that the Pandarans became extinct because of the orcs- our historians claim it was something in the orc's blood that mutated into a plague. While the cause of the plague that wiped them out is unknown, their memory lives in the Vale. Years after the Pandarans were gone, my people visited each of their towns, which there weren't many, and made records of everything they found. Hundreds of years of the history and art of civilization who was old before most races were ever born were found- but no cause to the plague that killed them. My people erected statues in honor of our old friends, and transformed the four villages that were still somewhat inhabitable into outposts. Their stories are still passed on through generations, so none may forget our closest, and first, friends.

***** Escape to Oryn's demiplane

       When we finally made it back to the inn, which had fortunately not caught on fire, we spied thirty guards waiting just outside. It was clear they were waiting for us, and considering the chaos we had unleashed in the last hour, it was a pretty safe assumption that they were waiting to arrest us. Dervish panicked and used something to open a portal that would take us to Oryn. Everyone except for Lan decided to step through the portal to what we hoped was safety; the paladin was true to his nature and stayed to see what the guards wanted. 

       On the other side of the portal we found ourselves in a grey, barren wasteland- Oryn's personal demiplane. A few moments after our arrival Oryn came to see us, and we began to catch him up on the events of the last few days. Jarrid was dead, we lost the Head and Arm to the vampires, and Lan was with the sultan's guards. I was reprimanded by Oryn for dispelling the field around the arena, apparently our employer doesn't approve of me accidentally starting a riot and getting half of a town set on fire. I didn't mean to dispel the barrier, I was trying to dispel the anti-magic field; I wanted to help, though the riot will make a fantastic poem or ballad. 

       We learned that Oryn can see through our eyes, which is creepy, even if it is extremely useful. It was from this creepy ability of Oryn's that we learned Lan had been captured- the sultan was a cultist, the entire thing had been a trap; which wasn't terribly surprising since we have two cults after us. Lan was being tortured at that moment, but we needed a little bit of time before we could face whatever was inside that palace; we were exhausted and our resources were low. Using some sort of time dilation field, Oryn was able to make 72 hours pass in his plane while only a few minutes passed in the real world; he also granted each of us a gift to help in the coming trials we would face, I got an Efreeti Bottle.

       When our time was up, Pharin suggested we make a quick trip to Ekbir to get better supplies before we went to the palace- I'll admit, the damned drow was right, we needed better gear to face this challenge. Everyone else argued about it, saying they didn't want to leave Lan in the clutches of the cult for too long, every minute he was in their hands was another minute they had to try to turn him against us. While the idea of facing evil Lan didn't sound good, walking into a trap where we were definitely outnumbered and outgunned didn't sound good either. The cult had far more time to prepare for this than we did, and unlike us, they knew exactly who they would be facing. Since they had had Jarrid on their side, they knew enough about our abilities to put things in place that could counter them. Pharin got tired of arguing with our comrades about this and exited the plane, returning to the spot we had entered, just a few minutes later. Andolin and I followed, and the rest of the group came after us- it was decided we would hit the Underbazaar in Kester for supplies, and we would not spend more than an hour. 

       The fire had spread into the Underbazaar in the minutes we were gone, and there was mass looting occurring... it was a good thing Lan wasn't with us, for we obviously joined in the looting. When we met back up an hour later we came up with a plan that we hoped would work. Pharin, Andolin, and Nanu would walk right into the palace, Pharin was the Champion after all, and he wanted his prize. Since Andolin was supposed to be dead he disguised himself as a high elf female- he was actually dead sexy. Nanu was disguised as a regular nightmare, since we didn't think they would let her waltz in to the palace as she was. Dervish, Skye, and I were also donning disguises- Dervish was a sovani, and Skye and I were drow- the three of us would attempt to sneak in through one of the back entrances to the palace that I had read about.

***** The Palace

      When we arrived at the palace Andolin approached the guards at the gate to announce that the Champion had arrived to claim his prize. While he was talking to the guards, my team broke away to begin going around the side of the hill the palace was on. We didn't get far before some of the guards called out for Dervish to stop- he had the Hand, and the fuckers can sense the stupid pieces. He used something that gave him an illusion of himself, while his actual body turned invisible. I could feel his hand on my back briefly, ushering me to keep moving forward. To stay in character, since it would be suspicious if Skye and I just kept going, I called over my shoulder that we would see him later. The false Dervish went back toward the guards, while the real one went airborne to stash the Hand. He confused the guards, since it looked like he was there, but they didn't sense the Hand on him anymore. 

       Skye and I were able to move a little further away before the guards called at us to stop... She spoke before I was able to, and things began rapidly declining for us from that moment. I attempted damage control, but no matter how well I lied, they weren't completely believing me; it didn't help that Skye talked a couple more times, damaging every inch of progress I made. Before we knew it there were about twenty guards surrounding us. I took a chance and tried to charm them all with my dance of seduction, but it only worked on one guard, who was killed instantly by the others. The guards closed in on us before I was able to try to use my dimension door to get us out. They wrapped their arms around me and covered my mouth and eyes, I could have made one last attempt to get away with dimension door, since I can hum my spells if need be, but with the way that day had been going I figured it would be best not to try. Skye and I were cuffed with manacles that cut us off from our magics, blindfolded, and taken to the dungeon below. As soon as I was in my cell, I discovered I could not sense Beauty, my familiar, it was like she had just vanished. I later learned that Pharin experienced this with his familiar too, as did Skye with her animal companion. 

       Dervish witnessed from above what was happening to Skye and Aurora and decided to try to help them, which resulted in him getting thrown in the dungeons as well. At least he had hidden the Hand before attempting to intervene. 

       Pharin, Andolin, and Nanu had a much easier time getting in the palace than their friends did. They were led directly into the sultan's throne room, which contained a huge mithril channeling circle. This place had been designed to cast some serious magic, but Pharin's ego made him confident that he could overcome even that. The sultan began questioning Pharin on his victory, feigning surprise that he had "killed" Dervish, Andolin, and Pimbin since they were all part of his team. Pharin tried to play up the sneaky drow card, something the mad wizard was skilled at, but unbeknownst to him the sultan could see through Andolin and Nanu's disguises.The sultan reveled to the group that this had all been an elaborate trap for Oryn, he believed if he kept the group in chains long enough that their benefactor would come save them. 

        He cast some spell that caused Andolin and Nanu extreme mental pain, but could not get past Pharin's mental protections. The fight to escape had begun. Pharin tried to cast several spells to defend himself and attempt to get out of the palace to no avail. The giant channeling circle was completely blocking his magic, so every spell the drow tried fizzled out. Unbeknownst to the group, Nanu had found an item during their "shopping" trip in the bazaar that would grant her a single wish. After watching in horror as Pharin tried and failed repeatedly to cast spells, the nightmorc decided it was time to use her wish. Just as Pharin found a gate spell that could get around the sultan's defenses, Nanu wished for the entire group to be safe in their suite in Ekbir.

***** Ekbir

       I was struggling to reach a potion that might help me out of these stupid manacles when suddenly I could hear the others again. I was still cuffed and blindfolded, but I could tell I wasn't in that cell anymore- I could also sense Beauty again. Lan had several knives in him, and was on the brink of death; Nanu had to use the hammer Dervish had that would raise dead. After our cuffs were finally off, the guards of the inn showed up at our room to investigate the noises they had heard- we hadn't walked in the door, so the room was supposed to be vacant. 

       Pharin decided to summon thirty-two fucking bunnies to deal with the guards... I don't know what that daft drow was thinking. The horrid hares proceeded to trip one of the guards and eat his clothing. Lan went into the hallway to talk to the innkeeper, while the rabbits tortured the guards. One guard stabbed the other in the face trying to kill the bunnies... which resulted in his arrest for murder. I swear that wizard is going to get us banned from every city in Flanaess. Once that business was finally settled, and Lan was done dealing with the innkeeper, we heard a loud bang, and Oryn stormed into our room.

       Without preamble, he snapped his fingers at Dervish and ordered him to retrieve the Hand; Dervish suddenly found himself back in Kester. It turned out that Oryn had come to try to rescue us, and showed up only moments after Nanu had wished us away. That halfling is terrifying when angry, and being on the receiving end of his wrath was petrifying. After spending a few minutes yelling at us all, and bringing Dervish back with the Hand, our employer placed a memory stone on the table and stormed out. I greatly hope we never have to see him that angry again. The stone showed us the lengths Oryn had gone to in order to try to save us. He bombarded the palace with a missile storm- the greatly upgraded magic missile, like the scroll he gave to Pharin for dire circumstances- the storm was followed by a comet, and soon the palace was no more. Between Pharin's fire and Oryn's anger, little of Kester was left standing; we had completely destroyed a once great city. 

       After our encounter with Oryn, we decided to spend a little time shopping in Ekbir before heading south once more. We still needed to get to the Forgotten City and get Kas' Sword before either cult did. I stayed behind to go into reverie, the events of the last few hours had exhausted me, Lan left, Skye went shopping in Ekbir proper, and everyone else went to the Underdark Bazaar. When I came out of reverie, I used my birthmark to send a message to my parents, telling them Ilryne had been taken captive as a slave, and they needed to find her before the Vale Curse activated, which would make her whither and die. I also warned them about what Andolin had told me, that the Cult of Kas had a huge gathering of vampires in the Vale looking for something; if they had somehow managed to stay hidden, which I doubted, the Vale needed to be warned. 

       Moonhollow, my home town, is on the opposite side of the Vale from the Black Keep, the Mage's residence, as well as the mage town of Seer, and Ebonwood, the capital, but the Citadel of the Mage is near my home. The Citadel of the Mage began its life as the palace of our king; the first King of the Vale had it built after binding my people to the Chaos that rules our valley. After the first Mage rose to power, he decided to have the Black Keep built, and turned the Citadel into a fortress that rumored to be filled with treasure and artifacts, but it is so filled with traps that none leave it alive- except the Mage, of course. While I would like to think my town is safe, since the Hollow is so far from the major areas of the Vale, I had this feeling that the vampires would be going toward the Citadel; I hoped my message came in time for my family to set up defenses. 

       When I was finished with that business I met up with Skye, and since there was nothing interesting for sale in town, we headed toward the Underbazaar. I disguised myself as a drow- again- and Skye acted as my slave. Though when we reached the entrance to the bazaar I remembered I don't speak the drow dialect of elvish... I cast a spell that would allow me to understand them, and sent Pharin and Andolin a note asking for help. Convincing the guards that I was indeed a drow and I had just forgotten the language was challenging, but with my superior acting skills I managed to pull it off. Eventually Pharin's guards came to get Skye and myself and we were taken to our group. 

      While the group was waiting for Aurora and Skye they saw people breaking in to one of the closed shops in the bazaar, and decided to stop them. Instead of a lengthy combat though, Pharin cast endless abyss in front of the would-be thieves, and threw them in it. They would be trapped in their until someone cast that spell in that exact spot again- by the time that was likely to occur they would be long-dead from starvation. Pharin wrote the owners a note saying that his new business, Braz'Dracon Shipping or Mercantile, or something- every time he says it the name is slightly different- would be "protecting" them in the same manner known to the human mafia. While Pharin was doing that, Andolin robbed the store. 

       Shortly after we met up with the group again, we heard a commotion in the streets. Outside we found a huge, sexy, barbarian man merrily pounding on some fool who had challenged him. His name is Narg, and Dervish met him once before Oryn had assembled us. Dervish gave him five gold and received an awesome magic item, I don't remember what, I was a bit busy ogling him. We went around doing this until finally it was Andolin's turn. The bastard gave him an Anstruth Harp! I have been wanting one of those for years! I didn't think they still existed! I tried to buy it from Andolin, but apparently Narg has some stupid rule thing that you can't sell or give away anything you buy from him. I then tried to trade him the stupid mind reading potion Narg gave me, but that wasn't acceptable either. I'm not sure if I like this Narg fellow. 

       The harp gave Andolin a sense of bliss, and he spent the next few minutes running around playing the harp and merrily breaking into buildings. Pharin came along behind him and wrote more of those protection notes. Eventually we all headed to the tavern to call it a night. 

       Shortly after our arrival at the tavern Ralliakkan showed up saying she had an announcement. But before she could tell us what was up, Pharin burst into the room and announced that he had found a banshee we needed to go kill. For some reason we all decided to follow him immediately without waiting to find out the reason Ralliakkan had come looking for us. 

       Ralliakkan had shown up to ask for help carrying bags filled with billions of gold and treasures that she had stolen from Kester. The rogue had robbed the town blind, and was going to give the party a cut if they helped her carry it all. Instead she found Lan, gave him the money and kept the treasures for herself. She never actually told the rest of the group what the reason was for her presence. 

       We showed up at the abandoned compound where the banshee was residing, and after spending a minute preparing our defensive spells, we strode in ready to face her. Upon entering we heard someone sobbing, which I thought was a trap, and a human woman came running out at us. I said we should be cautious, since I have read tales of banshee-like beings disguising themselves as human women to lure victims. The woman ran straight into Nanu's arms, and once she had a firm hold on the nightmorc, she began cackling- it turns out she was a hag, not a banshee. Before we could react she hit Nanu with a ray of enfeeblement, rendering her useless; then the hag vanished to the ethereal plane.

       Pharin was able to blink himself onto the ethereal plane, following the hag. He used torture chains to bind her, though she managed to break out of them far more quickly than we would have liked. After escaping the chains she returned to the material plane, where the rest of us were laying in wait for an assault. Skye entangled her, Dervish peppered her with arrows, and Andolin, Nanu, and I stabbed her; by the time Pharin returned to the material plane we had killed her. He claimed the house as property of house Braz'Dracon, and his empire began.

***** Day five in Kester

       The morning of the championship battle, Pharin proposed a plan to the group. He wanted everyone to buy items of Fireball and Firestorm, as a way of "fixing" the fight. Dervish, Pimbin, and Andolin were going to go to Dervish's paradise after they took down "The Barbarian," and Pharin would be the official winner. The drow tasked Nanu to find a Bottle of Air, so that she and Aurora could be "summoned" by him- they would be hiding in Nanu's portable hole with his familiar until the time came, Aurora just needed to disguise herself as something Pharin actually would summon- she tasked Skye with finding something to use as a disguise. Aurora was sent to the slave auctions, to buy a halfling, drow, and a human with about two extra arms worth of weight, just in case the contest officials wanted to test the remains of the group to make sure they were indeed the right race. The three men would be dropping ashes at their feet a second before Pharin set off his fire items, to make it appear like he had actually incinerated them. 

       I went to the slave auctions, and while looking over the "merchandise" I found someone I knew: my childhood best friend, Ilryne. I attempted to send Beauty with the blood drawing dagger from Aerys to get a sample of her blood so I could ask Pharin to help me track her later, but the guards noticed my poor familiar and killed her... the Shayl's dagger dropping to the ground. I had accidentally implicated them in attempting to tamper with slaves. It was an accident, but I doubt the twins will see it that way. I bought the slaves I needed and waited as long as I could for Ilryne to come up for auction, but my kind are considered prime merchandise since we're rarely seen outside of the Vale. A slave of her "quality" would be coming up toward the end, and time was not on my side. I vowed to look for her after the fight was over, my kind can get a general sense of each other through the birthmark we all bear, it would have to do for tracking her.

       Everything seemed to be coming together well for the group, upon Aurora's return Pharin and Andolin vaporized the slaves with their fire breath, and they passed out the ashes to the others without explaining where they came from. Nanu found a Bottle of Air, so she and Aurora climbed in the nightmorc's portable hole and settled down to wait. Since the pieces of Vecna and that mysterious hilt refused to go into extradimensional spaces, Pharin took the sword hilt that was in Nanu's possession and Dervish took the Hand from Aurora. Since they didn't want too many pieces in the arena at once, the group took the Arm to the Temple of Nerull, after much insistence from Pimbin that his temple could protect it. Skye kept the Head in her possession, since she didn't want to be in the fight; they decided she would be placing the bets for the group and everyone gave her their wagers. Unfortunately for Aurora and Nanu, the arena had wards on it that forced them out of the portable hole the moment Pharin walked into his ready room; they pair joined Skye and Lan in the stands to watch the fight.

       Jarrid was indeed the champion the cult had placed in the fight, but given all of the careful preparation the group had put into this, they felt confident that they could bring the barbarian down easily enough. What they didn't take into account was that Jarrid was smarter than Jayce, and he knew the skills of the party- except for Pimbin. Jarrid's first move was to slam an anti-magic field rod into the ground, dropping all of the group's carefully set up spells, and disconnecting them from the enchantment on Aurora's bagpipes. This fight did not begin well for Andolin, since Jarrid also knocked him out instantly; since Pharin couldn't cast any spells with the field up he went to help revive his brother- potions were unaffected by the field. The brothers both began to roast Jarrid with their fire breath, pretending they were getting it from potions, and Pharin realized he needed to break or bury the rod if he wanted magic back. 

       Outside the ring, Aurora and Nanu thought they saw something out of the corner of their eyes, but dismissed it until Lan got up and ran. Nanu went taking off after Lan, but he was able to navigate the crowd much easier than her, and she couldn't catch up to him. Frustrated, the nightmorc leapt toward the direction she had seen him go, landing on six people and killing them instantly. Lan found her when the crowd began screaming in terror after seeing six people get pulverized by the huge, black beast. Then the crowd began screaming in a different way, more like a mob-mentality akin to a riot. The nightmorc leapt again to close the distance between herself and the paladin, killing six more people. 

       I began to realize something was wrong in the arena after Nanu and Lan took off. Pharin had not cast any spells, or summoned any of his stupid rabbits. He was stabbing at the rod that Jarrid had slammed into the ground, which made me think that  it was something keeping him from casting spells. I got the bright idea to try to help, by throwing Dispel Magic at the ring. I sent Skye after Nanu, since I knew she had items that could do the same thing, which would give me more times to try. My first two tries were completely unsuccessful, but somehow my last attempt broke a spell... just the wrong one. I accidentally broke the barrier surrounding the battlefield, allowing the huge anti-magic field to wash over the entire arena. The audience saw this as an opportunity and began swarming toward the ring, rioting to get to the fight... Oops. 

       Pharin was continuing to hammer at the rod, when he realized that the hilt he had gotten from Nanu was not affected by the field. He attempted to activate it, since both cults already knew exactly where we were anyways, but Oryn had never given the group instructions on how to activate it, preventing Pharin from doing so. The drow continued working to bury the rod, with Pimbin's help, while Dervish and Andolin kept Jarrid as distracted as they could. Frustrated that this was taking longer than he would have liked- when it was really only a few seconds, but that drow lacks in patience- Pharin attempted to invoke Jayce/Haasenpfeffer to help him break the rod, but the field was too strong for him to even reach the bunny. Eventually, Pharin buried the rod, bringing magic back; which he celebrated by hitting Jarrid with a vicious attack that appeared to severely damage the barbarian. The group paralyzed Jarrid, and Pimbin finished him off, ending the real fight. With the crowd closing in on the group, because of Aurora's mistake, Pharin gave the command to activate the firestorm items they had, everyone dropped their ashes, and went to Dervish's paradise; Andolin was not happy there, it was too sunny.

       Skye caught up to Lan and Nanu just as they were exiting the arena, and the sight they were greeted to was not a pleasant one. The Temple of Nerull was in flames, and the drow priestess, the duergar priest, and a new face, a goliath, coming toward them. The group had managed to get the Arm from the Temple, thanks to Pimbin insisting it would be safe there, and seemed to be coming to get the other pieces from the group. The goliath was not with the drow and duergar though, he tackled the dwarf quickly and began fighting him. When the goliath had taken a few hits from the duergar, Skye thought he was on their side and attempted to heal him; he was a vampire, a member of the other cult, trying to take the Arm for himself. The priestess realized in the chaos that was erupting around them, that Skye had the Head, and promptly banished her. The Head began to tumble toward the ground, and Nanu leapt up to catch it before the cult could. 

       While Pharin's firestorms were going off, I took a look around the arena and noticed that there were about 100 vampires in the crowd, swarming toward the ring; they knew we had some of the components and pieces in it. When Pharin noticed that there were so many vampires in the crowd, heading straight toward him, he began launching fireballs into the crowd. All of the lore says one of the quickest ways to get rid of vampires is fire, and he was certainly aware of that. The air inside the arena was filled with fireball after fireball, hitting both rioters and vampires alike, and the drow blocked the only exit with a flaming web. A cacophony of screams was coming from the audience, who were now terror-stricken at the realization that they were trapped in a flaming arena, which was beginning to collapse, surrounded by vampires. It was a beautiful chorus that complimented the rain of fire well, and the drow's eyes glowed with madness at the sight of the terrified, trapped crowd.

       Nanu caught the Head and landed gracefully, while Lan attacked the priestess to break her concentration on the spell keeping Skye banished. The paladin took a severe beating from the drow, but managed to wrench the ring that maintained her concentration off of her... It erupted in black tentacles that instantly began to surround Lan, and his voice joined the spectators in their chorus of screams. Skye appeared just in time to see Nanu banished by the duergar, claiming the Head for himself. The goliath bludgeoned the dwarf until he dropped the Head, then took off running toward the arena, intent on claiming the pieces in Pharin's possession. Lan began to chant to counter the tendrils entwining around him, and he erupted in holy light, forcing the tendrils away from him.

       Pharin "summoned" Dervish, Pimbin, and Andolin back so they could join the chaos that was surrounding the arena. By the time they had emerged from the remains of the arena, all hell had broken loose outside. The fires had spread to other buildings, and the vampires were running amok, terrorizing the crowds of people. Andolin waded in to join the fray, gleefully lopping the heads off of any vampire who dared get close to him. Seeing a drow that happy is quite disturbing, I didn't know they were capable of that kind of joy. The goliath escaped with the Head and Arm, and the clerics of Vecna fled before the group could take advantage of their weakened state. They were able to keep the fire contained to only the part of town surrounding the arena, but their were hundreds of victims of Pharin's flames that night.

       The group began heading to the inn, which was a safe distance from the flames, and planned to visit the sultanate in the morning to claim the Talisman of Ultimate Evil as Pharin's prize.

Adventures in Oerth- The Bane of Vecna: Book One, Chapter Ten, Kester Part 1

***** Day 1 in Kester

       When the group awoke the next morning, they had a foul, bad feeling, similar to what they felt when they encountered the Book of Vile Darkness. While they were puzzling over what this could mean, since Lothar should have been in isolation with the book, Lan walked into their room. The paladin had a slim book in his hand, and the foul feeling was emanating from that. It turned out that Lothar had ripped two pages out of the Book and given them to Lan to bring to the group; pages can be ripped out of the book, and they just regenerate the next day. The first page had a list of what pieces of Vecna there are, and exactly what spell components the cult needed to bring the lich back. 

       While the group was discussing the pieces, Pharin announced he planned to dip the pieces they currently had- the Head and the Hand- in lead and make them mithrilmantine boxes to help conceal them from both cults. He told the group he needed to stay in Kester at least until the festival ended to have time to make the boxes; which worked perfectly since there was a series of five gladiatorial fights, and the grand prize was a component the cult needed to revive the lich: the Talisman of Ultimate Evil. The party decided to find out what the fights entailed and join as many of the preliminaries as they could. As they were discussing the fights, Ralliakkan joined the group, and provided Aurora with the diamonds needed to use her Raise Dead spell, so she could revive any of the party who fell in the contests. 

       After the group was done discussing the fights, Ralliakkan and Lan told the group that both the Arm and the Eye were currently in Kester. Lan took Skye and Dervish with him to go after the arm, and Aurora joined Ralliakkan to go after the Eye. Andolin, Pharin, Nanu, and Pimbin decided to go shopping in the Underdark bizarre.

       After following Ralliakkan for about two hours, making so many twists and turns down the streets of Kester that I lost track of where we were, we walked up to the cheapest brothel I've ever seen. Ralliakkan was able to walk straight past the pair of orcs guarding the doors, but they decided to hassle me instead... I hate orcs. I attempted to convince them to let me in, I was not paying 5,000 gold to go into a brothel THAT cheap. I also didn't have that much gold, but that's beside the point. Eventually I was able to charm one of them into knocking the other one out and let me in for free.

       By the time I had made it past the stupid orcs, Ralliakkan was nowhere to be seen. I described her to people and was pointed towards a room, that had a black haired female drow in it, but not the one I was looking for. It turned out Ralliakkan was in the next room over... When I came in the room behind her, I saw a very young looking male drow tied to a chair in the middle of a circle, surrounded by wards. She asked me if I wanted to remove the Eye, or extract information from the boy; I chose the latter, it had been a while since I had been able to use those talents. 

       Thanks to the stupid Eye, I was unable to charm the damned drow, leaving me with only one option: torture. I've been well trained in torture, as a bard you never know what kind of skills you'll need, so the college I attended in the Vale teaches you a bit of everything. The only thing I was able to get out of the lad was that the Eye wasn't working, thanks to the circle Ralliakkan had put him in. I did some of my best work, but I could not get anything from the boy. Once Ralliakkan returned, that was it for the boy, she scooped the Eye out, and it ate his soul. 

       There were two vampires waiting outside the room for us when we emerged, these ones in red cloaks instead of the usual red lacquered armor they usually wear. Ralliakkan threw an item that contained a Daylight spell at them, and I grabbed her, using Dimension Door to get us outside. We took off toward the inn, running as quickly as we could. 

       We had been running for two hours, and were almost back to the inn, when they caught up to us- again in the cloaks. In a single fluid movement, moving with the speed and grace of a dancer, Ralliakkan sliced both of the vampires to small pieces, then continued running toward the inn. That is the first time I've ever been attracted to a drow. When we got back to the room, she said she was going to go contain the Eye, and used some sort of magic portal.

***** Lan, Skye, and Dervish

       Lan had arranged to purchase the Arm from someone in town, so when he arrived with Skye and Dervish, they were presented with a large, ornate box. Once Lan confirmed that the Arm was in the box, he payed them a small fortune for it. The seller had planned to betray Lan though, so as soon as his payment was taken the seller's guards all drew crossbows and trained them on Lan. Skye and Dervish instantly prepared for a fight, but Lan is as good at convincing people to do things as Aurora; the seller had his guards drop their bows. The seller's agents attempted to tail the group, but they managed to evade them. Skye went back to the inn with the Arm, while Lan and Dervish went shopping.

***** Pharin, Andolin, Nanu, and Pimbin

       Kester, being a city of scoundrels, is full of pickpockets, most of which are pretty good at what they do. Others, are simply stupid and attempt to rob a nightmorc. This time they did not drop him down a sewer grate, but instead he tripped over an instrument cart. Pharin had Dancing Lights swarm him, and make the fool run in terror. The rest of their shopping trip was relatively uneventful, no other thieves were daft enough to try to rob Nanu.

       The group found out the details of the fights taking place over the next four nights, there was a bare knuckle fight that night, a ranged fight the next night, followed by a magic fight, and finally a subterfuge fight. The winners of each of these, and the fight from the night before, which had been a warrior knight-type fight, would face each other in a final combat to win the talisman. After much deliberation they decided that Andolin would join the bare knuckle fight, Dervish would enter the ranged, Pharin the magic, and Pimbin the subterfuge. They considered having multiple people in each fight to increase their chances, but decided it could end up being detrimental to them, since it would ensure at least one teammate would die. 

       Andolin easily sliced through his opponents that night and was declared the winner of the bare knuckled fight, his prize was a portable fortress.

***** Day two in Kester

       The majority of the group went shopping that day for supplies to aid them in the fights, with the exception of Skye and Aurora. Skye had been told by city officials that if she wanted to help the city, she should take care of the rat problem. Since she knew that Aurora had a Flute of Rodent Control, she recruited her to assist, and the two spent that day planning how to exterminate that many rats. Skye eventually decided that they should buy a Bag of Devouring, and charm the rats into that; after much searching the two found one, and since they wanted to watch Dervish's fight, they decided to start this project in the morning.

       Dervish found the ranged fights to be challenging, but he managed to slice through each of them in the end. He seemed to barely win the last one, peppering his opponent with arrows, leaving her a pincushion in the end. His prize was a Mantle of Displacement.

***** Day three in Kester

       With the exception of Aurora and Skye, everyone went shopping again the next day. The bard and the druid set to work exterminating rats, and Aurora charmed them so well that they were literally dancing in the streets. By the time they went to meet the group for Pharin's fight, they had killed over 108,000 rats.

       Pharin attempted to disguise himself as a crazy, elderly wizard for his fight, but with wizards age usually brings about power, so his ploy made him the fan favorite. Fortunately he realized his mistake in time, and revealed himself for his true age; he attempted, and succeeded, to convince the crowd he was fairly feeble minded, beating his first opponent to death with a broom, and dropping Andolin's portable fortress on top of the other one... Pharin won a mantle of spell resistance for his efforts.

***** Day four in Kester

       Again everyone went shopping except Aurora and Skye that day. The pair spent their day charming rats again, this time only killing 22,000. When they went to the officials for payment, they did not believe that the two had actually killed all those rats. Apparently Skye had only decided to do this to help people, not for money. I wasted two days I could have been getting drunk on helping her kill stupid rats for no reason other than that she's nice.

       By the time Pimbin had to be at the arena for the subterfuge fight, his opponent had killed every other contestant in the match. The odds were favoring him too much, so Aurora convinced the crowd that his opponent was actually Ralliakkan, swinging the odds to a more profitable angle for the group. His fight was the most grueling of them all, and he only won because Pharin invoked Haasenpfeffer. While Haas did not actually show up, because he was still frolicking with Jayce's soul, Pimbin was raised and given the opportunity to backstab and finish off his opponent. The halfling won a figurine of wondrous power, the one shaped like a horse, that gives its user a nightmare steed.

       The group had prevailed over all who stood before them, Pharin, Andolin, Dervish, and Pimbin were to face a mysterious opponent known as "The Barbarian" the next day. Everyone assumed it was Jarrid, since Lan had said the cult had a champion in the fights, and they had not seen any other contestants that seemed linked to the cult.

Adventures in Oerth- The Bane of Vecna: Book One, Chapter Nine, the Road to Kester Part 2

***** Day 8 to Kester

       Our heroes spied the drow priestess of Vecna and the gray dwarf-looking fire guy (duergar) from Yecha surrounded by the ruins of a little farm town. The priestess was standing over someone, looking like she was questioning or threatening- probably both- the individual. There were bodies strewn everywhere, giving the appearance that a large battle had taken place before the group arrived. The dwarf was busying himself destroying a house while the priestess interrogated her prisoner. 

       Pharin used dust of disappearance to make the group invisible, while Dervish and Nanu surrounded the priestess and dwarf in silence arrows so Aurora could start her bagpipes without alerting them. As the party advanced on the pair, the dwarf noticed the silence that surrounded him and broke one of the spells quickly; he then hurried over to the priestess. Once they had finished removing the silence spells, they began trying to strip away the group's buffs and defenses. When their first spell went off, Nanu was suddenly visible, and just a few feet from them. Pharin summoned a pair of "wolf bunnies" and a pair of cave crickets- their chirp is so loud that it engulfs any sounds made near them, rendering spells that require speech useless. One of the bunnies exploded the moment it got near the priestess, likely because of something she did. The group peppered the pair with arrows while Nanu began a melee assault; Andolin appeared behind the pair, stabbing the priestess in the back. 

       Apparently the pair decided they did not want to fight the group this day, they vanished into thin air. The figure they had seen the priestess standing over was still alive, and turned out to be another cultist of Kas. It was decided that they needed to send him somewhere that was better equipped to interrogate the vampire; Pharin sent a message to Lan, who appeared a couple hours later- looking like he had just come from the ruins of Greyhawk; Lan took the prisoner away quickly. During the wait I noticed that the vampire never took his eyes off my drum, he could somehow tell that the Hand was inside it. 

       There was one mostly intact house left, and the group stayed there for the night.

***** Days 9 and 10 to Kester

       We did not get attacked at all this day, but we did meet a very expensive merchant who was also heading to Kester; after much discussion we decided to travel with him.

       The next day was also peaceful, and we gratefully enjoyed the break we were being given by the cults.

***** Day 11 to Kester

       Our heroes were not attacked on this day either, though they did see fighting in the distance. Bodies were flying, and the group couldn't see what exactly was fighting what. Skye decided to scout the battlefield, and discovered it was two thri-kreen hunting parties, but she couldn't tell what exactly the thri-kreen were fighting. After much discussion, the group decided it wasn't their business and stayed away from the fray. 

***** Day 12 to Kester

       That morning the group was awoken by the terrified whinnies of the horses that pulled the merchant's wagon. One of the horses was being shredded to pieces by some unseen force, which made the group decide to investigate from the safety of their Huts. What they saw was worse than they imagined... it was Pharin's demon bunnies. They had finally caught up to the monsters, and now had to face their creation. 

       Pharin set to work making a circle to entrap the monsters, he thought that since they were once his it might work. I used my flute of rodent control in hopes that I could charm the monsters into leaving, to no avail. This brought their attention to us, terrifying those of us who looked at them into paralysis- except for Dervish, who was so scared of them that he ran away. Pharin managed to call one of the bunnies to his circle, while the other two continued to glare at the party and devour the horse. 

       Dervish recovered from his fear and turned back to face the demons, he completely shredded one of them- but it didn't go down. Pharin put that bunny in his bag of devouring to finish it off, and managed to lure the other two into the bag as well. This ensured that the beasts would die and never return. 

       Later that day, as the group was beginning to look for a good place to camp for the night, they spotted more of Vecna's cultists heading their way. It looked like they were looking for the group, but couldn't ascertain their exact location- until they actually saw them. Pharin had made an attempt to contain the Hand, and it was somewhat working. The party made quick work of the clerics, but the fighters gave them a bit more trouble- of course the group was able to take them out without much injury. 

***** Day 13 to Kester

       We were granted another day of peace from the cults. We did spot a thri-kreen hunting party in the distance, but we decided to just sneak around them; thri-kreen can be difficult to fight, and they don't have gear that's really worth the effort it takes to kill them. 

       That night as we were setting up camp, we heard the crackle of an explosion, and saw a streak of flame in the distance. It appeared to be about sixty miles from where we were, so we didn't worry much about it.

***** Day 14 to Kester
  
       Around midday the group saw both cults battling each other in the distance. Andolin had developed a hatred for undead and demanded that the group go kill them- after much deliberation the group decided to let the cults kill each other first, then they would sneak up and kill whoever was left standing. In the end there were only three of Vecna's cultists left standing, and Andolin decided to teleport to the battlefield to finish them off. Taking them by surprise, he killed all three in a single stroke. 

       When they were about thirty miles outside of Kester, they came upon a Brewfest celebration. The majority of the group joined in the festivities that night.

***** Day 15 to Kester/Night 1 in Kester

       When the group began making their way to the gates of Kester, still with the merchant, they saw a group of the vampires arguing with guards- the guards were paid not to allow them entrance to the city. While our party passed the cultists, they all had their eyes on my drum- apparently all of this bloody cult can sense where I'm keeping the Hand.

       Once they were inside the gates of Kester, they parted ways with the merchant and began to head toward an inn. Along the way, an idiotic 15 year-old human male attempted to cut Nanu's pouch from her belt. We think he thought himself invisible. Nanu grabbed the boy by the throat and lifted him with ease off the ground. Pharin patted the lad down and found a small dagger in his possession, which he proceeded to throw down the sewer grate that was near them. This dagger hit a poor drow male who happened to be walking under the grate at that moment. The wound wasn't fatal, it only hit him in the shoulder, but it hurt like hell. Pharin then lifted the sewer grate, and Nanu dropped the human down it... and he landed on top of that poor drow, killing both of them instantly. 

       When they reached the inn Andolin had pointed them toward, Pharin went inside to get them a room, while Andolin wandered off, and everyone else waited outside. Apparently one of the vampires had been tailing the party, and Andolin captured him as their prisoner. Once inside their suite the group began torturing their prisoner. 

       Pharin remembered the ritual that would allow him to find other pieces, and took some of the vampire's blood for it. Unfortunately, the Hand was in their custody, so it pointed at Aurora. 

      During the interrogation of their prisoner, Lan showed up with the vampire he had been given days before. The paladin joined in the torture, and Andolin produced a sun stone of Pelor that Lan had given him. After much of nothing, Lan used a spell that forces undead to speak the truth, though the group didn't learn much from it. They were told that the cult had many of Vecna's pieces, but they could not get an exact number or which ones they had.

       Eventually, when it became clear that they would get nothing more useful from the vampires, Pharin summoned brain slugs, something drow priestesses use to extract information. Andolin used one of them, at great pain to himself, and demanded to learn everything it knew; during this memory transfer, its head caved in. When Andolin finally came back to himself, he told the group that there was a huge gathering of the vampires in the Vale. They could only mean my Vale, since it's the closest one to Kester- now things were personal, they had invaded my home.
